The Count believes the Countess is hiding a lover in her closet. He is astonished to find Susanna instead. So is the Countess, because the pageboy Cherubino had been in there; unbeknownst to her, he has jumped out the window. Figaro announces that his wedding to Susanna is about to begin. The Count questions him. Antonio the gardener complains that someone has jumped on his flowers. Figaro claims to the skeptical Count and Antonio that it was he. Marcellina, Bartolo, and Basilio demand that Figaro marry Marcellina to repay his debt to her. The Count agrees to judge the case.

Leonore, whose husband Florestan has been unjustly imprisoned, is posing as a boy to infiltrate the jailer Rocco’s house and find out where Florestan is. To her dismay, Rocco’s daughter Marzelline is infatuated with the “boy,” Rocco is encouraging it, and his assistant Jaquino is jealous.

Act II Duet: O namenlose Freude!

Leonore and Florestan are joyfully reunited.

Leporello impatiently waits outside Donna Anna’s house for his master Don Giovanni. Anna appears, struggling to unmask Giovanni. Her father, the Commendatore, challenges Giovanni to a duel and is killed. Leporello and Giovanni flee as Anna returns with her betrothed, Don Ottavio, who swears to avenge her father’s death.

Manon has left the impoverished Des Grieux to live with the wealthy Geronte. Des Grieux bursts into her luxurious boudoir, and Manon begs his forgiveness, which, after a struggle, he passionately grants.
